PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

 

Sr. SQL Server DBA – PFPC Advisorport  2/2006 - Present

 

Senior SQL Server DBA for this financial institution ($100B in managed assets).  Responsible for administering 4 SQL 2005 Clusters including 10 production SQL servers (150 databases occupying 2 TB), 7 Client Acceptance SQL Servers, 7 QA SQL Servers, and 18 Development SQL Servers.  Administered all facets of the database environment:

 

Administration

  • Responsible for SQL 2005 migration.  Installed & configured SQL 2005 on 4 Clusters in production, created SQL 2005 QA environment along with 6 SQL 2005 Development environments.  Each Dev environment consisted of named and default instances.  Developed approach for SSIS utilization, portability, logging, and deployment strategy. Created parallel Litespeed migration scripts to reduce overall migration time.

  • Installed, customized, and maintained SQL 2005 Transactional Replication.  Set up Distributor, Publisher, Subscriber, publications and subscriptions with horizontal row filters.  Developed SQL Replication ALTER process used for dynamically altering Articles, Publications, and Subscriptions.   Created process for daily Subscription validations.

  • Developed, automated, and documented LiteSpeed 2005 full\differential\trasaction log backup, local recovery, and disaster recovery implementation for all SQL Server databases across Production, Client Acceptance, QA, and Development environments.

  • Designed and developed SQL stored procedures to accommodate reindex, recompile, update stats, update usage, check DB, and check catalog.   Developed SQL Alert Mail routine using Collaborated Data Objects to simplify SQL Job eMail notification; incorporated CDO alert into all existing SQL Jobs.

  • Provided 7x24 on-call coverage, supported development staff of 40, and provided technical input, sample code, and general guidance to SQL Server DBA's.

 

Tuning

  • DBA team lead on performance monitoring and tuning tasks on operational DB’s.  Used SQL 2005 Database Engine Tuning Advisor (DTA) and SQL 2000 SQL Profiler to capture traces to tables; created custom Reporting Services reports to render trace data.

  • Tuned monthly/quarterly Core reporting data load process using SQL Profiler and ActivityTrace.ini to monitor and tune poor performing SQL Stored Procs and DTS packages (SQL tasks and Data Pumps).  Reduced Core Data Load execution time from 50 hours to < 10 hours

 

Project DBA

  • Team lead on Reporting Services.  Introduced, installed and configured Microsoft Reporting Services 2005.  Soley responsible for all RS report design, development, and deployment for dozens of RS reports.  Provided RS training to DBA’s and Report developers.

  • Assigned as project DBA responsible for supporting development project: MOSAIC/Asset Directions (.Net web-based application).  Responsible for the remediation of all legacy DTS packages and stored proc’s affected by new database design. 

 

Sr. SQL Server DBA – Project Management Institute  1/2005 – 2/2006

Responsible for production support of 120 databases spanning 17 production SQL Servers, 20 non-production SQL Servers, 5 multi-instanced SQL Servers, 1 Clustered SQL Server (2 nodes), Snapshot and Transactional Replication, and Reporting Services Team Lead.  Lead SQL Server DBA on Certification system responsible for building DTS package based architecture using stored procedures to transform and port data from 9 legacy SQL Server DB’s into Certification SQL Server 2000 clustered database.  Tuned Certification database using SQL Profiler and Index Tuning Wizard.

 

Data Warehouse Architect / Sr. SQL Server DBA – Ceridian Corp  3/2001 –  1/2005

Responsible for design and development of MS SQL Server based Data Warehouse.  Designed and modeled fact and dimension entities, slowly changing dimensions, and balance/audit processes. Utilized SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS) components and T-SQL stored procedures, designed/developed a DTS layered architecture to perform daily ETL processes and reporting process.  The architecture included:

 

·          Dynamic connections w/in SQL Server - using DTS global variables referencing universal data link file settings

·          Parallel processing -- a single DTS Driver initiates separate, independent, non-related DTS packages which accommodate the nightly ETL Fact and Dimension entity load process

·          Restartability at a granular level (e.g. at the sub-package level)  with full auditing at job and task levels

 

Production DBA on both LifeWorks Online (LWOL) WEB-based application and LifeWorks Client Reporting Data Warehouse supporting 650+ internal users and 1700+ external clients;  Custom installed, configured, and maintained all SQL Servers and supporting utility jobs using administrative stored procedures along with Snapshot and Transactional Replication; also responsible for capacity planning, design, development, tuning, and disaster recovery.  Configured SQL Server 2000 transactional replication for OLTP DB. 

 

Director of Data Services – OmniChoice.com  5/2000 – 3/2001

Hands-On SQL Server DBA, Manager.  Managed 2 SQL Server DBA’s, 2 Report Developers, and 5 Data Collection Analysts in a SQL Server 2000 \ Brio environment. Responsible for developing database infrastructure for Production, QA, and Development environments including the establishment of Network infrastructure, standards & procedures, naming conventions, SQL Server topography, configuration management, capacity plan, corporate data model, SQL Server database design and database administration tasks. Responsible for the design and development of a Data Warehouse for this .Com's Report Service offering.  Also designed and developed corporate intranet site using Microsoft Front Page.

 

Manager of Data Services – Wilmington Trust Company  2/1999 – 5/2000

DB2 DBA / SQL Server DBA responsible for capacity planning, database design, T-SQL development, database tuning, and disaster recovery for several database systems in DB2 n-way data sharing Parallel Sysplex environment.  Utilized DFSMSdss Snapshot / Virtual Concurrent Copy (w/ RVA: FDT, FTD, FTT, and TNT) and BMC’s Concurrent Copy utilizing XBM/Snapshot and I/O Avoidance.  Utilized Boole and Babbage Mainview for DB2 to monitor and tune application SQL and DB2 system resources.  Coordinated the design/development of Data Services Intranet WEB site providing capability to display department information and all data models via ERwin WEB publisher.

 

President – Turner Consulting, Inc.  12/1994 – 2/1999

DB2 DBA / SQL Server DBA responsible for capacity planning, database design, program development, database tuning, and disaster recovery of several database systems.  Extensive experience with BMC RM Groups, Triggers, Filters, Validate, Concurrent Image Copy, Modify, Quiesce, Reorg, Repair, Stats, Recover, and D/R all using dynamic work file allocation and cleanup.  Used Omegamon/DB2/MVS/CICS and DB2PM to monitor and tune application SQL and DB2 system resources.  Client experience includes The Vanguard Group, PECo Energy, Wilmington Trust, and SEI Investments.

 

Systems Engineer – IBM Corporation 1/1989 – 12/1994

DB2 DBA and Project Leader on multiple large scale IDMS to DB2 conversions.  Responsible for capacity planning, data modeling, database design, program development, database tuning, and disaster recovery of several DB2 systems.  Certified IBM Project Manager.   Client experience included Armstrong World Industries, PECo Energy, PNCBank, GPU, and MG Industries.  Received IBM Technical Excellence Awards on multiple contracts.

 

Senior Consultant – Andersen Consulting 3/1986 – 1/1989

Project Leader on multiple assignments.  Analyst/developer using DB2, CSP, COBOL/CICS, VSAM, and TCAL. Promoted from Staff Consultant to Senior Consultant after first year.   Client experience included Campbell Soup Co., AMP Inc., Lukens Steel, and Trenton State Department of Labor.  Received Andersen fast-track promotion to Senior Consultant.
